Berekum, often referred to as the “Golden City”, is a prominent town in the Bono Region of Ghana. Serving as the capital of the Berekum East Municipal District, it plays a significant role in the region’s socio-economic and cultural landscape.

As per the 2021 Population and Housing Census, Berekum East Municipal has a population of 106,252, comprising 50,163 males and 56,089 females.
Language and Culture
The indigenous people of Berekum speak Bono Twi, a dialect of the Akan language. The town is rich in cultural heritage, with traditional festivals and customs that reflect the values of the Bono people.

Economy
Agriculture forms the backbone of Berekum’s economy. The fertile lands support the cultivation of cocoa, cashew, and various food crops. Additionally, the town has a vibrant market scene, with trading and artisan activities contributing to its growing economy.

Mfansi Sacred Grove: Located in Kato, a suburb of Berekum, this 40-hectare grove is steeped in spiritual significance and is believed to be inhabited by spirits. It offers a serene environment for reflection and connection with nature.

Kwafie Festival: Celebrated annually in November or December, this festival honors the ancestors and includes activities like the burning of a large bonfire, traditional drumming, dancing, and a durbar of chiefs.
